Auditions are announced for The Wind Is Us: The Death that Killed Capote, a full-length, three-act, one-actor play chronicling the life and death of iconic author Truman Capote. The play focuses on Capote’s life from the execution of the pair of men who violently killed a Kansas farm family in 1959 through his passing in 1984. The Wind Is Us is written by Colorado-based playwright Mike Broemmel.
At this time, an actor based in the state of Colorado is sought for the lead role in this production.
At the heart of the play is the impact researching and writing Capote’s seminal book In Cold Blood had on the author. This effort includes a stark look at the complicated relationship Capote had with one of the two men executed in the gallows at the Kansas State Penitentiary in 1965.
The role calls for an actor of smaller stature (Capote was 5’ 3”) who can portray a flamboyant and self-identified gay man on stage. The script is fluid enough to permit the casting of an actor of between the late 20s through 59 (or who appears to be or can play within this age range). Some flexibility may also be possible in regard to the height of an actor.
The objective is to cast an actor who has an interest in portraying the lead character in the play over the course of a two-year period of time. Performances are easily scheduled around the needs and requirements of the actor because there is only one cast member.
Auditions will be held via Zoom during the first week of March. An actor interested in auditioning needs to send a bio or resume together with a headshot to: info@theatrixusa.org. Sides from the script and other audition information will be provided upon receipt of this information. Questions can be sent to this email or by calling (720) 216-3042.
Callback auditions are planned to be in person (state of the pandemic permitted) later in March at 1514 Curtis, Denver, Colorado, which is located in the Theatre District.
Rehearsals will be planned around the actor’s schedule, with an anticipated premiere date of September 2, 2022, planned at this time.
Compensation:
$1,500 stipend for rehearsals and two preview performances (tech and dress rehearsals with limited audiences)
$400 for each performance during the first year of production
$500 for each performance during the second year of production
The production team utilizes the Community Standards for Theatre for Colorado.
